How UK A-levels and degree classifications convert to Portugal's grading scale
Finished UK studies and need to know what that looks like in Portugal? Portuguese universities and recognition work on a 0-20 scale.
A-levels
| A-level grade | Portuguese grade |
|---|---|
| A | 19 / 20 |
| B | 17 / 20 |
| C | 15 / 20 |
| D | 13 / 20 |
| E | 10 / 20 |
UK degree classifications
| UK class | Portuguese grade |
|---|---|
| Third Class (3) | 12 / 20 |
| Lower Second (2:2) (2.2) | 14 / 20 |
| Upper Second (2:1) (2.1) | 16 / 20 |
| First Class (1) | 18 / 20 |
A First becomes 18 out of 20. You cannot get 19 or 20 when converting from a UK class to a Portuguese scale.
When you actually need this
You usually care about this number when you ask Portugal to recognise your UK degree, or when a Portuguese university wants a final grade on their scale for a master's or similar application. Recognition is handled through DGES.
What if your transcript is not a First / 2:1 / 2:2 / Third?
Some UK results are reported as plain numbers on a normal scale. In that case Portugal uses the general foreign-grade formula instead of the tables above. If it's an undergraduate degree, you can run that on our grades to Portugal calculator. If your result fits neither the table nor that formula, DGES decides case by case.
